A Harare man was jailed for six months for battering his wife on accusations that she was letting rats feed on his dagga.
Richman Mabhiza, 25, of House No. 3290 New Stands, Chadcombe gave his wife, Sabina Zarugo, a thorough hiding accusing her of failing to keep his mbanje from rats.
Mabhiza, who left his 25 year-old wife almost paralysed, was initially slapped with 10 months behind bars before four months were suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour.
The state led by Kudakwashe Munyoro heard that on October 22 at around 8 am the couple was at their place of residence when Mabhiza asked his wife why she was letting rats feed on his mbanje.
It was said that Sabina then asked her husband how she was supposed to keep the rats away from his mbanje.
And that did not go down well with Mabhiza who then started kicking and assaulting her with fists.
As if that was not enough, the following day at almost the same time, Mabhiza again questioned his wife why she was failing to protect his dagga from rats.
A misunderstanding arose, ending up with the 25 year old unemployed man thrashing his wife with an iron bar. Sabina reportedly sustained injusries on her back and she could hardly stand on her own.
He was later taken to court where he was charged with physical abuse before magistrate Rumbidzai Mugwagwa slapped him with a six months jail term.
Mabhiza will know that crime does not pay while serving his jail term.
